Terpineol is a monoterpene alcohol that has been isolated from a variety of sources such as cajuput oil, pine oil, and petitgrain oil. There are four isomers, alpha-, beta-, gamma-terpineol, and terpinen-4-ol. beta- and gamma-terpineol differ only by the location of the double bond. Terpineol is usually a mixture of these isomers with alpha-terpineol as the major constituent.

– It is popularly used in fragrance industry. It is used as a solvent in many perfumes and deodrants for pine odor.

• Terpineol oil is highly soluble in alcohol and ether. It is used as an ingredient in personal care products like cleansers, detergents and soaps. It can be used as a flotation agent, wash agent and disinfectant.
• Terpineol oil has antibacterial, antifungal and antiseptic properties which is why it has many pharmaceutical applications. The a-terpineol is used as an antioxidant, anticancer and antihypertensive compound.
• Terpineol oil is also used in chemical industry. It acts as an intermediate in the production of very high purity alpha-terpineol.
• Terpineol oil also works well in iron sheet printing and enameling of glass ware.
• Terpineol oil also has applications in other industries such as paper, printing inks, protective coatings and mining industry.
